Short Story/Poetry Contest Rules
Short
Story Division
2 categories: ages 13 to 18, and ages
18 and older
- Entrants can enter
one unpublished story in
either the “ages 13 to 18” category, or the “ages 18 and older”
category. Please list your age if
you’re 13 to 18, in the body of your email. If you’re 18 or older, simply state in
your email, 18 or older. Any PAID contributors, past or present,
to @Urban Magazine including the online and print editions, and their immediate
families, are not eligible
to win.
- The maximum length of short story submissions is 900
words. Stories can be in any genre and address any theme, as long as the
story does not contain graphic violence or sexual situations.
- Simultaneous submissions are fine, but please contact
us immediately to withdraw your work should you learn that it is a
finalist or winner in another competition.
- Entries will not be returned and no corrections may be
made after submission to the creative writing contest.
5.
Entries must be the original work of
the entrant. Any entries found to have been plagiarized will be disqualified.
- Authors retain all copyright to their work. @Urban
Magazine will have first publication rights to the winning stories.
- Winners will not be announced prior to the release
of our January, 2013 issue of @Urban Magazine. The first place winning
stories (one chosen from our thirteen to eighteen year old group), and
will be published in our print, digital, and online editions. Second and third place winners will be
published on our website, www.AtUrbanMagazine.com.
- There will be 3 prizes awarded in each category: 13-18,
and adult. In each category, prizes
will be: 1st place - $100 gift card from Arvest Bank. 2nd place - $75 gift card from Arvest
Bank. 3rd place - $50 gift card
from Arvest Bank.
- The judges’ decisions are final and neither the judges
nor the editors of @Urban Magazine will enter into a discussion about the
decisions.
- Entries that fail to comply with the entry rules and
requirements will be disqualified.
- Deadline to receive submission is midnight (CST) on November 10. No late entries will be
accepted or considered.
Poetry Division
1.
There is no age restriction on the
Poetry division. Any PAID contributors,
past or present, to @Urban Magazine including the online and print editions,
and their immediate families, are not
eligible to win.
2.
Each entrant can submit up to three poems for
consideration.
3.
The maximum length of poetry submissions is 24 lines. All poetry is invited, as long as it does not
contain graphic violence or sexual situations.
4.
Simultaneous submissions are fine,
but please contact us immediately to withdraw your work should you learn that
it is a finalist or winner in another competition.
5.
Entries will not be returned and no
corrections may be made after submission.
6.
All entries must be previously
unpublished.
7.

To
Enter (IMPORTANT PLEASE READ)
1.
@Urban
readers may enter both the short story and poetry contests, if desired. It is not a requirement to do so.
2.
DO NOT
put your contact information on the body of your poem or short story attachment. List all you contact information: name,
address, age, phone number and email address in the body of your email.
3.
Double
space short stories.
4.
Indent
paragraphs, and make sure you have 1-inch margins all around.
5.
If your
story is more than one page, make sure the name of the story and the page
number is on each page.
6.
Use an
easy to read font like Times New Roman or Courier.
7.
DO NOT copy and
paste your story or poem in the body of your email.
8.
When you
have double or triple checked your work, submit
your story and/or poems to: editors@AtUrbanMagazine.com as an email Microsoft Word
attachment.
9.
@Urban
will email a response to you, once your entry has been received.
