submission guidelines

@Urban Magazine is a lifestyle magazine devoted to showcasing what’s best about our region, which includes the River Valley and Northwest Arkansas.  We also report on outlying areas as destination locations for our readers.

What sets @Urban apart is our ability to tell stories.  When you read our magazine, you feel like you’re sitting across the kitchen table with someone, hearing their story, getting a taste of what life is like for them.  It seems effortless when you read it, but it takes real work and a good deal of experience to make it happen.

We work with a small group of talented freelance writers, but we are always looking for others who understand how to tell a story, include all the pertinent information, and paint a picture with words.  For the most part, the level of storytelling in @Urban requires a background in creative non-fiction and/or journalism; however, we are willing to take a chance on a new writer who shows great potential.

@Urban Magazine only takes submissions by email, at editors@AtUrbanMagazine.com.  Pease submit writing samples using basic manuscript form.  If you’re new and unfamiliar with manuscript form, there are many examples online, but for the most part it means using a standard font, such as New Courier or Times New Roman that is 11 or 12 points, double spacing and putting your name, address and contact information on the first page of a manuscript.   Files sent to editors@AtUrbanMagazine.com must be in the Microsoft Word format.  If you’d prefer to list links to your published work, as opposed to attaching clips, that’s fine with us.

The best way to understand our style is to spend some time on our website www.AtUrbanMagazine.com reading our past issues.  It won’t cost you a thing, and it will put you ahead of the game when you submit.

If you have a story idea for @Urban, you can send a query letter to editors@AtUrbanMagazine.com and tell us why you’re the person to write the article.  Keep in mind, we may have already come up with the idea ourselves.  If so, your idea becomes redundant.  It will not reflect on your ability to write.

Payment, deadlines, story length and assignments will only be discussed with those chosen to write for @Urban Magazine.  If you’re not selected it doesn’t mean you’re not a talented writer.  Several factors go into our selection process, including how a writer’s voice fits our magazine.

Thank you for taking the time to consider @Urban Magazine.
