channeling davy crockett

Fort Smith attorney Tom Harper dropped of a short story about the Alamo written by his grandson, Porter Oberle, who lives in Texas.  The story was for a competition in Burnet County, one Porter handily won.

We wanted to share it with you.  As you read it, remember Porter is only fourteen.  We remember what we were doing at fourteen and it wasn't nearly as impressive as this!

the man who made everything all right

Jim Martin tells the story of his father, the man who stepped in to help him when no one else could, and how that act made all the difference in Jim's life today.

not a brut, but smells like one

Marcus Coker loves his dad, but that doesn't mean he doesn't want to change some things about him.  Like his cologne, his diet, and maybe even his wardrobe.

finding right

In honor of Father's Day, we're taking a look at our own fathers, how they live their lives, and what we do and don't know about them.

@Urban writer Marla Cantrell tells the story of her father, Albert Doyle Cantrell, and the mystery that surrounds the part of his life that happened long before she was born.

my best example

Marcus found a scrapbook his mother kept in the years before he was born.  Looking at them now, he sees the person she used to be before the trials and tribulations turned her world around.

It is a beautiful story of love and the lessons he learned from his extraordinary mom.

the way i should go
Words matter. That's the biggest lesson @Urban's managing editor learned from her mother.  This is her story of what's left behind when your mother leaves too soon.

never too old to rock and roll

Flying far below the radar is a group of musicians that lights up downtown Fayetteville nearly every weekend.  They play because they love it, because it makes them happy, because they don't know how to stop.

Temper their enthusiasm with day jobs that keep them in check (and in charge) and you have some of the longest running music careers on the local scene.

the man who never stops giving back
Preston Swofford rises early each morning, works out, and then starts his shift at St. Edward Mercy.  Sounds pretty ordinary until you consider that he's ninety, and he doesn't have to be here.  This is what he lives to do.

how to get katy perry's attention
Take a bunch of college guys, throw in a snow day, add a Katy Perry song and see what you get.  If you're Van Buren's Devon Park the mix results in a little thing called global recognition.
